Everything we know about Season 17 in Destiny 2

Season 17 for Destiny 2 is just around the corner, and that means it’s time to round up everything we know (and don’t know) about the new season with info related to the new Dungeon, new weapons and loot, raid rotation, new crucible map, plus the rework of Iron Banner. I’m also going to speculate about some of the things we don’t know, perhaps most importantly… the story beats.

First of all, let’s dive into the things we do know.

New Dungeon

When talking about the new Raid Rotator system recently in TWAB on April 14th, Hippy mentioned a new Dungeon coming in Season 17 with Bungie saying “Each Season, the newly released raid and dungeon will grant Pinnacle rewards for all encounters. As an example, in Season 17, Vow of the Disciple and the upcoming [REDACTED] dungeon. Outside of these, we’ll have a raid rotator and a dungeon rotator, each offering a Pinnacle reward once completed.”

Bungie said they wanted to add a raid, dungeon, raid, dungeon in the Witch Queen, so this coming season it looks like it’s going to be a Dungeon, which is great news. The dungeon team always manage to knock it out of the park. The last Dungeon we got was for the 30th Anniversary and previous to that we had Prophecy. Hopefully, this Dungeon will be free-for-all players like Prophecy, rather than Grasp of Avarice, which was locked behind the 30th Anniversary Bundle fee.

There’s good news when it comes to farming the Dungeon too, once again from the same TWAB update from Hippy “All lockouts on encounter rewards for Legendary gear are being removed, which means all Legendary drops in both raids and dungeons will be 100-per cent farmable if you so choose.” So much like Grasp of Avarice, the Dungeons are going to be farmable when it comes to the Legendary Rewards.

Arc or Solar Subclass 3.0

For the release of Witch Queen, we got the new Void 3.0 rework, bringing our Void subclass up to the standards of Stasis. Arc and Solar are next on the agenda; we have one coming in Season 17 and then the other coming in Season 18. Which subclass 3.0 are we getting? We don’t know at this very moment, but we are very likely to have an update from Bungie before the season starts. Personally, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Solar…

Iron Banner Rework

Iron Banner feels stale right now, with its antiquated token system and large loot pool. Bungie dropped a load of info last week in their This Week At Bungie update, head on over there to get the full rundown. The major changes include a new rank up system with Lord Saladin, power level requirements being removed from Iron Banner, plus it’s going to feel more like a holiday event. When you arrive in the tower Saladin is going to be front and centre, much like Eva Levante is at the moment for holiday events. There’s a new reputation system coming in, which is going to promote the use of Iron Banner weapons, armour and ornaments. We’re getting Iron Engrams to focus, plus we’re getting a specific title for Iron Banner, something we’ve been asking about for a long time. There’s also going to be an introduction quest that everyone has to do, but don’t worry… it’s only once per account. Rift is also making a comeback and is going to be available during Iron Banner in Season 17, and in the future Iron Banner is going to feature other PVP modes, so it’s no longer just going to be a variant of Control. Iron Banner is also going to be less frequent per season, we’ve got two Iron Banner’s coming in Season 17, week 2 (May 31st) and week 8 (July 12).

New Crucible Map

Joe Blackburn updated the community related to PVP in August 2021 and said the following “After reprised maps in season 16, season 17 will come with a brand-new map. There are a bunch of new environments in Destiny 2, and we’re excited to start bringing them into the crucible.”

Therefore in Season 17, we’re getting a new map in a new environment. We don’t know if that’s going to be the Throne World or Europa just yet, but hopefully, it’s going to be a good map.

Weapons

We’ll all pretty much do anything in this game for loot, whether that’s farming Dungeon and Raid bosses or shooting into a cave for hours on end. Season 17 is going to bring plenty of new loot, plus a few returning favourites to the fold too.

Here’s what Bungie had to say recently about Season 17 weapons.

With Season 17, the ritual weapons available when ranking up will be the Heavy Machine Gun, and Chain of Command.

For those itching for new Playlist weapons:

  • Crucible – Riptide Fusion Rifle
  • Gambit – Dead Weight Shotgun
  • Vanguard – Strident Whistle Bow

For Nightfall drops (includes both standard and adept versions)

  • Horror’s Least Pulse Rifle
  • D.F.A. Hand Cannon

And finally, Trials of Osiris:

  • Forgiveness Sidearm
  • Burden of Guilt Fusion Rifle
  • The Messenger Pulse Rifle and Shayura’s Wrath will be leaving the Season 17 pool.

Season 16’s weapons will be shifting over into the standard loot pools with the Crisis Inverted Hand Cannon in Crucible, the Herod-C Auto Rifle in Gambit, and the Vanguard Shotgun Fortissimo-11.

Sandbox update

There is a huge sandbox update coming, meaning small changes to weapons, perks, exotic, and mods… pretty much everything in the game is getting tweaked. Lots of changes are focused on PVP, trying to improve the PVP sandbox, given the lack of updates recently. PVE feels in a good place, so it’s time to give PVP some love. I am not going to go through the whole thing, but here are some notes.

  • Glaives are getting a buff
  • Flinch is getting a rework
  • In-air accuracy is changing
  • We’re getting more stats for weapons displayed in the game
  • There are going to be less one-hit-kill options in PVP
  • You’ll see less special ammo
  • Fusion rifles and shotguns are getting a nerf
  • Auto rifles, pulse rifles and machine guns are getting a buff

Raid Rotation

Bungie wants to freshen up old raids, so they are going to rotate the pinnacle rewards between legacy raids and dungeons, to offer incentives for players to go back to that content on a regular basis. Bungie spoke at length in a recent update, so here’s what they had to say about it.

One way we’re freshening up the raid and dungeon experience in Destiny 2 is by developing a new rotation of featured content that we think you’ll like starting in Season 17. This is designed to make raid and dungeon content a bit more enticing over the course of a season, while also providing more ways to play when jumping into different activities with friends and clanmates.

We’re breaking up our new Rotator system into Seasonal and Weekly categories so that players can have a little additional freshness when taking on the weekly hunt for power.

Let’s start with our Seasonal rotation since this implementation is short and sweet. Each Season, the newly released raid and dungeon will grant Pinnacle rewards for all encounters. As an example, in Season 17, Vow of the Disciple and the upcoming [REDACTED] dungeon. Outside of these, we’ll have a raid rotator and a dungeon rotator, each offering a Pinnacle reward once completed.

For those wondering about the weekly rotation, this particular inclusion will have a chance to feature all raids and dungeons not listed as the Seasonal rotation. Looking at rewards, for the weekly rotation, completing the final encounter in any of the chosen raids or dungeons will award a Pinnacle drop from a Weekly Challenge. For any raid or dungeon that offers a higher difficulty, such as Master Vault of Glass, that higher difficulty will also be available to select should players be itching for an additional challenge.

Let’s have a look at the major thing we don’t know, and that’s the story.

Witch Queen and Season 16 brought with it so many stories beat to the game. The death of Savathun, the introduction of The Witness, and Lord Saladin heading off with the Cabal. Hopefully, we’re going to start the march towards Lightfall very soon, and gather our allies, as we’re going to need them in the fight against The Witness. Could Ana and Rasputin come back into the fold? We’ve not heard much from them since the arrival of the pyramids at the start of Beyond Light when Rasputin was switched off and Ana managed to save him and put him into an engram. Also, what’s happened to Osiris and Saint-14? Osiris was returned by Savathun, but in a coma and we haven’t heard from him or Saint-14 since. It’ll be interesting to see which enemy race is going to be the main offender this time around, especially as we’re building alliances among our former enemies. The Eliksni are in the Tower, we’re aligned with the Cabal, which leaves only The Vex and the Hive.
