2022 Video Game Predictions (and reviewing 2021)

2022 is here, so it’s customary to make some predictions for the year ahead. Today I am going to check out what I said a year ago for 2021, and see how I did. Then I’ll dive into 2022 predictions.

2021 Predictions review

Nintendo Announces Switch 2

The Switch Pro was rumored and reported on before Nintendo then announced the OLED Switch. Rumors still persist that a Switch Pro does exist and Nintendo is holding back on it for some reason, perhaps related to supply chain issues.

Breath of the Wild 2 (Zelda’s 35th Anniversary)

This one unfortunately didn’t happen, but I hold out hope for 2022.

Social Games Boom

I don’t think this one happened, not like it did in 2020. Some of the most popular games of 2021 based on the steam charts are

New World
Halo Infinite
Grand Theft Auto V
Dota 2
Cyberpunk 2077

Sony Launches Competitor For Xbox Game Pass

This one hasn’t happened.. yet, although reports in December did state something is coming in April in 2022.

“The service, code-named Spartacus, will allow PlayStation owners to pay a monthly fee for access to a catalog of modern and classic games, said the people, who asked not to be identified because they weren’t authorized to speak to the press about the plans. The offering will likely be available on the smash hit PlayStation 4, which has sold more than 116 million units, and its elusive successor, the PlayStation 5, which launched more than a year ago but is still difficult to buy due to supply chain issues.”

Sony Unveil PSVR2

This did happen, kind of. This was announced on Feb 23rd 2021

“Today I’m pleased to share that our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity. Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.

One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.

There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021. But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans, as the development community has started to work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality.”

E3 online

This one did happen. E3 was back, it was a little bloated, but it was better than 2021 when the game announcements were spread across the whole summer. This felt much more like a traditional E3, without the leaking of personal information. The debate about the purpose of E3 goes on, especially with the rise of the Summer of Gaming and GK continuing to put on a great show.

Sora Joins Smash Ultimate

This happened and fans were happy, unbelieveable. This was announced on 5th October and Sora was added into the game on 19th October.

Overwatch 2 Released

This didn’t happen. In fact, Blizzard had a terrible year in 2021, embroiled in multiple law suits and also the Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan left.

Here’s what Jeff had to say before he left:

I am leaving Blizzard Entertainment after 19 amazing years.

It was truly the honor of a lifetime to have the opportunity to create worlds and heroes for such a passionate audience. I want to express my deep appreciation to everyone at Blizzard who supported our games, our game teams and our players. But I want to say a special thanks to the wonderful game developers that shared in the journey of creation with me.

Never accept the world as it appears to be. Always dare to see it for what it could be. I hope you do the same.

Jeffrey Kaplan

Development on Overwatch 2 will continue with assistant director Aaron Keller taking over as the new director on the sequel. Keller previously worked with Kaplan on World of Warcraft.

“Jeff’s been a great leader, mentor, and friend, and he knows how much we’re going to miss him,” Keller writes in a letter to the community. “I’ve been lucky to work alongside him and the rest of the Overwatch team for many years in building something that continues to inspire people all around the world, and I’m honored to carry the torch forward.”

Kaplan joined Blizzard in 2002 where he started as a designer on World of Warcraft, developing quests for the upcoming MMORPG. He eventually was credited as a game director on WoW. In 2009, Kaplan spearheaded an unannounced project at Blizzard called Titan, a first-person shooter game.

Bloodborne Remaster Announced

This didn’t happen. Although Sony did acquire Bluepoint Games, the masters of the remaster.

Bungie Reveals Matter

This didn’t happen. In fact Bungie has been very tight-lipped about Matter all year, although they have been hiring and expanding in 2021.

Overall 3/10. Not very good!
