How to get The Last Word (Exotic Hand Cannon) after Beyond Light in Destiny 2

The Last Word is one of the best Exotic Hand Cannons in the game, and is particularly good in PVP, due to its high rate of fire. It’s a permanent staple of the top 10 weapons for competitive PVP, and today I’m going to run through all the steps for how to get it, plus how to get the materials used to buy it, so you can get your hands on this The Last Word nice and quickly.

The Last Word belonged to Hunter Jaren Ward. It takes its name from the exchange between himself and the petty tyrant Loken. After Jaren’s death, the gun passed to his adoptive son Shin Malphur, who used it in his legendary showdown with the fallen Guardian Dredgen Yor.

Before we get into how to get it, let’s have a look at the weapon itself.

The Last Word

The Last Word is an Exotic Kinetic Hand Cannon

Fan Fire – This weapon fires full auto. Hip-fire shots deal bonus precision damage while increasing reload speed and accuracy.

Hip-Fire Grip – Increases accuracy, stability, and precision hit targeting when firing from the hip.

Looking at the stats we have Impact 78, Range 28, Stability 46, Handling 28, Reload Speed 82, Rounds Per Minute 225, and Magazine 8

How to get The Last Word

To get The Last Word you can buy this from the Tower from the Exotic Kiosk in the Tower, which you can find next to the Vault and it’s called Monument to Lost Lights.

The Last Word will cost you:

1 Exotic Cipher
125,000 Glimmer
200 Etheric Spiral
1 Ascendant Shard

You can get an Exotic Cipher from the Season Pass, or you can complete the quest from Xur – he’s around from Friday until Tuesday. I do a guide on Xur’s location each week, so make sure you subscribe and hit the notifications bell to never miss an update.

Glimmer can be acquired from pretty much any activity – strikes, gambit, crucible, public events, patrols, etc. You can also go to Spider and trade in materials for Glimmer, but don’t trade in Etheric Spiral as you’re going to need those for The Last Word.

For the Ascendant Shards you can purchase these from Banshee-44 in the Tower, or you can get them from high-level nightfalls as random drops from the final chest.

Finally, there’s the Etheric Spiral. This is a little more in-depth so I will get into how to farm Etheric Spiral next.

How to farm for Etheric Spiral

Etheric Spiral is the planetary material found on The Tangled Shore and there’s a couple of ways to get them. Before you head down onto The Tangled Shore you’ll want to prepare, in particular with your ghost shell. There’s a mod called Wombo Detector which helps you detect caches and resources within a 50m range. Put this on your ghost as this is going to come in use.

Once you’ve done this head down to The Tangled Shore. There are a few farming methods we’re going to combine here. Pick up all the bounties from Spider, he’s near the Thieves Landing zone in the building. His bounties will reward you with a bunch of Etheric Spiral.

Next, you’ll find to find the caches hidden on The Tangled Shore, you’ll be able to see these on your map and they will reward you with Etheric Spiral. Finally, you can find individual Etheric Spiral on the ground. If you get your ghost out your Wombo Detector Ghost mod will be able to help you find them nice and fast.

It is also worth checking out Spider on the Tangled Shore as he may be selling or trading Etheric Spiral. His inventory rotates daily. Do be careful with Spider though. I would wait for the 5 x Etheric Spiral to be sold for 1 Legendary Shard, rather than 5000 Glimmer. Unless you have loads of Glimmer and Shards, as Spider will fleece you of everything you’ve got.

Once you have all the materials then head back to the Monuments to Lost Lights in the Tower and purchase The Last Word.

History of The Last Word

Destiny 1 – The Last Word is an exotic hand cannon first introduced in Destiny Year One. A Year Two version of The Last Word was available in The Taken King. The Last word is great in Crucible because of its’ fast rate of fire and high impact.

Destiny 2 – The Last Word returned in Black Armory and was unlocked for all players on January 29, 2019. Unlike Thunderlord’s quest after Festival of the Lost, it is not time-gated and can be obtained at any time. In November 2020 it was made available from the Monuments to Lost Lights in the Tower for purchase, given the vaulting of its quest.

The Last Word Lore

“Yours, until the last flame dies and all words have been spoken.” —Shin Malphur to you, as you journey forth into the unknown

Knew this day would come, and with it, one last lesson…

There’s an end to all things, kid. Good and bad.

Sure, the best times seem small, and the bad tend to linger, but the only permanent is eternity.

I’m off to meet it.

If you’re lucky, someday you will too.

For now, though, you’ve got road yet traveled and lives yet lived.

I know you got hate in you. Most do. Trick is to use it, ‘stead of it usin’ you.

But you know this—vengeance is a motivator, not the motive.

Meant to—hoped to—say these words to you one last time in person, but writin’ ’em down seems the safe bet with the prey we’re trackin’.

Worst part about bein’ a good guy? As much as you may want it, you can’t always win. But that truth don’t bother me. We do the right thing, ’cause the right thing needs doin’. So, when another does harm—casts their shadow upon you or your kin—you go ‘head and hunt for the justice needed to answer any sins inflicted.

Don’t hunt ’em ’cause you been wronged.

Hunt ’em ’cause what they did was wrong.

There’s a world of difference there, kid.

One makes you selfish. The other makes you a hero.

And I see a hero in you.

And with this last good lesson, a gift. I know it feels right in your hand—its weight easy, its trigger smooth. Use it as you will—I know you’ll use it right.

It’s yours now, ’til the last flame dies and all words’ve been spoken.

‘Til that time.

Safe journeys. Straight aim. And good huntin’.

J.

—A letter to Shin Malphur from his third father, Jaren Ward, written before Ward’s ill-fated showdown with the infamous Dredgen Yor in the wooded hollow beyond Beggars’ Gulch
