Insomniac and Sony gave us a detailed look at Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart this week, first by revealing the mystery female Lombax name, Rivet, and then with a State of Play almost entirely dedicated to the game. It’s only a few short weeks now until we get our hands on Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart on June 11th, so today I am going to round up all the info we have as we prepare for what could be the biggest PS5 release to date.
Insomniac Games have been doing a great job for Sony, bringing Spider-Man back into the video game conversation with their near Game of the Year in 2018, followed up by Miles Morales as a launch title for PS5. Sony decided they were doing so well that in late 2019 they added Insomniac to their stable of studios to create exclusive games, and that investment could be about to pay off in a big way with the release of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. As well as great gameplay, this one looks to show off all the bells and whistles the PS5 has to offer.
In Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart Ratchet and Clank appear to have been separated, with Clank in another dimension and in the hands of a female Lombax called Rivet. The main mechanic in the game will be jumping quickly between dimensions, something that’s only really possible on the new hardware powered by the super-fast SSD in the PlayStation 5. This was the immediate feature that drew everyone’s attention during the summer of gaming event where Sony’s PS5 was introduced.
The game appears to have all the classic Ratchet and Clank style gameplay – this is a 3D action platformer, with Ratchet and Clank looking to save the day. However, it looks like Rivet is going to be playing a big part as she’s a new playable character. The visuals look stunning, the world looks full and vibrate, it’s going to be one of the biggest and best PS5 launches so far.
In Rift Apart we’re going to see the return of many classic characters from the Ratchet and Clank franchise. Ratchet and Clank take starring roles but we also have Dr. Nefarious too, returning from Up Your Arsenal and A Crack In Time. Rivet is a new character, a fellow Lombax with a bionic arm.
Throughout the game, we’ll be jumping across dimensions in an attempt to stop Nefarious’s plans. The Dr. wants to exterminate all life across the universe when all reality is thrown into confusion by the Dimensionator device. Players play as both Ratchet and Rivet through a number of different levels and environments to stop Dr. Nefarious. Ratchet and Rivet will make use of their Rift Tether to quickly jump through portals to new dimensions.
The power and features of the PS5 will be demonstrated throughout the game, with Insomniac developing the game with the PS4 in mind from the ground up. Jumping through dimensions will be made possible by the high-speed NVME storage drive in the PS5, and this is going to allow for instant jumping to new worlds.
The dual sense controller will be used in Rift Apart also with the wide variety of weapons available to our Lombax friends. Weapons will have dual modes with the adaptive triggers coming into play to control different firing modes and the haptic feedback will be called upon. So far Astro’s Playroom and Returnal have been great showcases for the PS5, however, I am predicting Rift Apart will pretty much blow all these others away and be the most popular PS5 game to date shortly after its release.
Ray tracing will be used to full effect here to help boost the lighting and the reflections in the game, which is going to look especially good on all the shining metal and water-covered surfaces. Seeing as Clank himself is metal, he’s going to pop that extra 20% on the PS5. There’s going to be a performance mode too, which will reduce the visuals and allow for a smooth 60fps if you prefer performance mode.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is set for release on June 11th, 2021 and I think it’s going to be a big one for Sony and Insomniac. It’ll be showing off the features of the PS5 as well as offering up gameplay mechanics not seen before in regards to the jumping quickly and seamlessly between worlds, so there’s a lot to be excited about for this upcoming release.
