Stasis is one of the main selling points for Beyond Light, and rightly so it’s a super fun ability and pretty effective for all classes. Getting your new darkness subclass is only the first step though because once you have stasis, you’ll then need to work with The Exo Stranger on getting fragments and aspects so you can customise your subclass. The following is a guide for how to get Stasis Subclass and unlock fragments and aspects.
To get Stasis, you’re going to need to complete the campaign for Beyond Light. That should be pretty straight forward, it may take a few hours of levelling but once you are through there then you’ll pick up Stasis from the darkness and you can switch between your light and dark subclasses on the character screen in the menu.
Stasis works differently from your light subclasses light arc, solar and void. These old subclasses have set trees and you can pick and choose certain combinations, however, they’re pretty much set in stone and you can’t customise as much as you can with Stasis. The customisation part comes in with Aspects and Fragments.
To access Aspects and Fragments you’re going to need to complete a quest after the main campaign called Born Into Darkness. You can pick this up from the Exo Stranger after the main campaign. Head on down to where she’s marked on the map and then pick up the quest.
The Born into Darkness quest is fairly lengthy but the rewards are well worth is as you can to access Aspects and Fragments. The quest itself isn’t too complicated, it’s more time consuming than anything else.
Let’s jump into the quest.
Born in Darkness Part 1
To get the Born in Darkness questline you’ll want to complete the main campaign and then go and speak to the Exo Stranger in the south of Europa. Once you finish part 1 of the quest, you’ll get access to Aspect Of Control, which you’ll need Salvation’s Grip for, so make sure to check out that guide too.
Step 1: Energized Ether & Stasis melee final blows
The first step will see you defeating enemies on Europa and using your new Stasis abilities.
- Collect 50 Energized Ether by defeating Fallen on Europa
- Defeat 10 enemies on Europa with Stasis melee final blows
To help here with the melee kills I used travelers Chosen, the Exotic Sidearm from Season of Arrivals to help recharge my melee abilities back nice and quickly. Fallen should be easy to find, you can always go into a Lost Sector if you’re having trouble out there in the open on Europa with other people getting the kills.
Step 2: Strikes & Stasis kills
Next up is to complete Strikes with Stasis equipped and defeating enemies that have been affected by Stasis.
- Complete 3 Strikes with Stasis equipped
- Defeat 60 targets affected by Stasis in Playlist Strikes
Once again, I used Travelers Chosen here to help get me those 60 enemies affected by Stasis.
Step 3: Defeat Weniks’ platoon
The first part of the grind is out the way and now it’s time to take on a mini-boss called Weniks’. There should be a waypoint on your map to follow and this will take you through the Bray ExoScience building towards Eternity. Once you’re there, take out the platoon and it’s onto the next step.
Step 4: Bunker E15
Now go to Bunker e15 and clear it out as normal and then have a chat with The Exo Stranger at the end next to the computer terminal. After the chat, use the Skeleton Key, then it’s time to move on.
Step 5: Speak with the Exo Stranger
For the final step of part 1, speak to Exo Stranger near her base at the south side of Europa and she’ll give you Aspect of Control. To complete this you’ll need Salvations Grip to destroy some hidden Entropic Shards. I did a detailed guide on the Entropic Shards, you can check that out here, but I’ll quickly show you where they are.
Once you find the Entropic Shards destroy them with Salvation’s Grip then complete Aspect of Control to get your first Aspect. As I am a Titan, this gave me access to Cryoclasm and allows me to slide through enemies and shatter them when they are frozen.
Next up, it’s time to get the fragments and it’s back to Born into Darkness Part 2.
Born in Darkness Part 2 quest
You should receive Born into Darkness Part 2 when you go and visit the Exo Stranger, at the same time as Aspect of Control quest. If you didn’t get it at the same time, try completing Aspect of Control first and then you should have access to Born into Darkness Part 2.
Step 1: Defeat Vex
This is similar to part one, although this time you have to kill Vex.
- Defeat Vex on Europa to collect 50 radiolarian fluid
- Defeat 20 enemies frozen by Stasis
You can head into the Perdition Lost Sector on Europa to find some Vex if you are having trouble getting them out there in the wild.
Step 2: Complete playlist activities
The next step of the quest is to complete playlist activities. You can choose strikes, gambit or crucible – whatever you like best. Or you could do one of each. Pick the one you like best and then complete these objectives.
- Complete Playlist activities with Stasis equipped
- Defeat 60 combatants with Stasis
Step 3: Defeat House Salvation Fallen
Now you’ve done that it’s time for another battle with Fallen, this time near Riis-Reborn Approach. HEad up through the lifts and keep going until you find the Crux of Darkness. Defeat all the Fallen then it’s time to go and see Exo Stranger once again.
Step 4: Perdition Lost Sector
Head towards the Perdition Lost Sector on Europa and clear it out as normal. The Exo Stranger will be at the end again, and once more use the Skeleton Key on the terminal after having a chat with her.
Step 5: Speak to the Exo Stranger
For the final step of Part 2 go and speak to the Exo Stranger by locating her marker on the south zone of Europa, fast travel down there and have a chat. She’ll give you a Duskfield Grenade and you can pick up 2 Fragment Quests that allow you to buy fragments from her.
Once again you have the choice between Vanguard Strikes, Cruicble Matches or Gambit Matches. All of these options are VERY grindy, so I picked the Vanguard option knowing there’s a cheese here, so we can do it much quicker than normal.
Umbral Duty & Umbral Infiltration
What I did for this is go into The Scarlett Keep Strike on the Moon. What you can do from here is jump up the wall (equipping the highest jump possible from the subclass screen) and jump over back into the area where there is the Altars of Sorrow. The reason for this is because there’s going to be more enemies and more opportunities to use Stasis and this will make this step much much faster than going through strikes. I equipped Travelers Chosen once again to help me get my abilities back nice and fast plus I equipped my new Duskfield grenade I just earned to help with the killing enemies who are slowed part of the quests.
If you do this method then it’s worth getting your fireteam onboard otherwise you’ll be pulled back into the strike at some point when they reach the tower at the scarlett keep. Also, you’ll leave them a guaridan down from their fireteam.
Once you complete these quests you can buy fragments! It’s very much up to you what you buy and what suits your play styole. There’s various options like
- Whisper of Fissures – Increase the dmaage and the size of the burst of stasis when you destroy a stasis crystal or defeat a frozen target
- Whisper of Durance – Slow lasts longer
- Whisper of Bonds – Defeating Frozen targets gets you super energy
- Whisper of Refraction – Defeating slowed or Frozen Targets grants you class ability energy.
Once you have chosen your fragments then it’s onto the Born in Darkness Part 3.
Born in Darkness Part 3
Have a chat with the Exo Stranger and she’ll give you Born in Darkness Part 3.
Step 1: Vex and Fallen
This is similar to the other parts of the quest, only this time you have to defeat Vex and Fallen, plus enemies affected by stasis on Europa.
- Defeat 30 Vex and 30 Fallen on Europa for Residual Darkness energy
- Defeat 20 enemies affected by Stasis on Europa
Step 2: Stasis in Gambit
For the next step of the quest it’s time to head into Gambit. You will need to complete three matches with Stasis equipped and kill 60 combatants in Gambit with Stasis abilities.
- Complete 3 Gambit matches with Stasis equipped
- Defeat 60 combatants with Stasis final blows in Gambit
Step 3: Defeat Teraks
Once you’re done in Gambit, then it’s time to find another Fallen Captain of House Salvation. Teraks’ is in Eternity found near Bray ExoScience near Cadmus Ridge. Head towards the marker, clear out the enemies and then it’s onto the final step.
Step 4: Concealed Void
Head toweards the concealed void Lost Sector, clear it out and have a chat with the Exo Stranger. She’s there with Ana Bray, who’s pretty shocked with the dealings with the Darkness.
Step 5: Speak with the Exo Stranger
Finally, talk with the Exo Stranger again at Beyond to complete Born in Darkness Part 3 and unlock the Coldsnap Grenade.
That’s it for the Born into Darkness quest. These are our first steps into Aspects and Fragments. I think we’ve only really scratched the surface of the customisation and what we can do with Stasis. There’s going to be more to come, with finding things out there in the wild and more Stasis unlocks coming later in Season of the Hunt.
Let me know how you get on with the quest and if you have any questions, leave them down there in the comments.
