Destiny 2 – How to get Whisper of the Worm (Exotic Sniper Rifle)

Whisper of the Worm is one of the best DPS snipers in the game right now and the good news is that it’s much easier to get than it ever has been before, you can go in with an average leveled Guardian and pick up one of the best guns in the game in under 30 mins. The following is a guide to how to get Whisper of the Worm in Season of the Worthy.

Many exotic weapon quests in the game require multi-part steps that can take many hours and in extreme cases take days. The good news with Whisper of the Worm is that you can get it done in about 25 mins. The best thing about this quest now is it’s very easy to solo.

Pick a loadout that works for you. It probably won’t matter too much the first time as the enemies are much easier now. I went in with Izanagi’s Burden and Recluse. I found this good for the range, as sometimes you want to sit back and snipe to make things easier and then a good close-range weapon to clear out the ads. Auto Rifles are effective in Season of the Worthy

Find the portal on Io

The first step of the quest is to go to Io and aim for the Lost Oasis region. You’ll need to wait for the Taken Blight public event to spawn. Once the public event spawns then one of three yellow bar taken enemies will spawn:

  • Urzok, Aspect of Hate
  • Ta’urac, Aspect of War
  • Drevis, Aspect of Darkness

Check out the map and have a look at these locations on the screen. Hop on your sparrow, ride to the locations and you should be able to find them. They’re bigger than most enemies and take 30 sec or so to take down.

  • Left of the Lost Oasis spawn, in a crack below ground
  • Left of the Lost Oasis spawn, up in a cave near the Lost Sector
  • Right of the Lost Oasis spawn, near the tree

Once you find one of these guys, kill them and that will open a portal back in the Lost Oasis near the Ulan-Tan Lost Sector. It’s massive and it glows, you can’t miss it. Head through the portal and the quest for the Whisper of the Worm has begun!

The Whisper

This mission has a 20-minute time limit, and if you die throughout the quest then you’ll have to respawn. One tip on this mission would be to play wearing headphones (or with the volume cranked up). This has some of the best music and sound effects in the game.

Once you get into the mission you’ll need to get to an area above where you spawn in. Jump into the trees and then jump up and around to get to the starting area. Shoot the blight and head down into the tunnel. If you can you want to try and get through this maze and jumping puzzle section as quickly as possible. It might be worth doing it once to map a route and practice, and then the next time you can do it for real. Do what’s best for you. There’s no real reason to rush super hard because the enemies at the end are pretty easy (there’s just a lot of them).

Move forward through the tunnel, ducking under when necessary and keep going forward. You’re going to come across areas where things poke out of the wall at you, try and avoid those and keep moving on. You’ll have to jump down and try and do this with a controlled jump as the ledges are narrow and there’s more things trying to get you from the walls.

Once you reach the end of this section, jump down to the ledge to the left and then run and jump to the next section. Here you’ll have to do a blind jump around the corner. Once you’ve made it here, crouch down. I found putting on a weapon or piece of armor here that made me move faster e.g. Dire promise really helps, as the next section is going to need some speed. The walls will be moving in and out and once the walls have moved fully in, start moving forward. Stop at the section where there’s a gap in the moving walls. Time is once again when the wells have moved in and gone forward, watching out for the little gap in the ledge. Jump over that and you’re through.

Next, you’ll want to jump down to the left and crouch down to move forward. Watch out for the gaps again, these can be tricky, and then jump up onto the platform and again when the platform reaches the top. Time is right to jump off the platform when it hits the highest part, otherwise, it’s going to be tricky to get to the next section. Keep moving forward and then go left down a tunnel. Move forward through the tunnel, crouch when needed and keep going.

Next, you’ll want to take a big jump forward and aim for the ledge when the energy is coming from the walls. Try and time it so when you land here you don’t get blasted by the walls. Jump again and move under the ledge. Watch out for the Taken who are trying to snipe you at this point. Keep going forward, doing another huge jump and land again on the ledge. One more jump and through the hole in the wall and you’ve made it through that section.

Now you’ll be faced with a big open room with energy walls and big ball type things coming out the walls. Jump right, onto the ball and then make your way along the right wall and you want to go to the furthest point here, up and then through the passage.

When you drop down, you’ll be faced with a huge open area. You don’t need to go into this area as there’s a little short cut here. Dropdown into the room, and then crouch down and move into the corner. When you have done this your torch will come on and you’ll be able to make your way through this space.

Keep going round and then jump over to the ledge. Hug the left wall and keep moving around until you have no more path and then jump over onto the next ledge. Look down and you’ll see a door in the distance. Jump down and when you’re near the door jump again to soften the landing.

Make your way through this section and be careful not to drop down. Go round, and jump up and you’ve completed the jumping and puzzle section.

After you get through the jumping puzzle there’s a series of rooms you’ll need to clear with Taken and Taken Blights. Try and clear the rooms as fast as you can. If need be, get rid of the Taken Blights, but if you clear the rooms of all the Taken then you will be able to progress. It’s not necessary to get rid of the Blights, but they can get in your way when you’re trying to clear the rooms of enemies.

Once you get through to the final room a boss will spawn as well as the Taken Blights and boatloads of Taken. Get the first boss down to a third of his health and another two bosses will spawn, together with more Blights and Taken. This is where things can get a little hectic. If you have more than one player in your fireteam then split up and take different sides of the rooms, if you’re on your own take it slow and pick your opportunities to lay some damage on the bosses. Takedown the bosses before the time limit expire and Whisper of the Worm will drop for you. Congrats!

I went in at 973 and managed to get through all encounters solo. I did pick up a fireteam member on Io, but he was having trouble with the jumping puzzles. Although, he was super happy at getting Whisper at the end and we had a little dance celebration after.

Also, once you have done this once a heroic version of the mission will appear on the map and you can repeat to get the catalyst for the weapon. This one is a little more tricky solo, so maybe go in there will a fireteam.

The Whisper of the Worm

This is a 72 rpm solar sniper rifle with 3 in the magazine. It has a very cool looking taken the design and comes with some great stats like max impact and huge range.

The main benefit of this weapon is the perk White Nail, where rapidly landing three precision hits refills the magazine. It also has Mulligan, where missing a shot has a chance to return ammo directly to the magazine. This is a power weapon that uses heavy ammo, but if you can utilize that main perk then ammo won’t be too much of a problem here.

After you’ve got the gun jump into a strike and test it out. This is also going to be useful for raids, and any other end game PVE activity. Not sure it’s a great pick for PVP as it’s quite slow, but it’s up to you.

Let me know down in the comments what you think of Whisper of the Worm. How does it compare with other Snipers, and would you like more of these secret missions in the game?
