Destiny 2 – How to get Izanagi’s Burden (Exotic Sniper Rifle) after Shadowkeep updates

Izanagi’s Burden is probably the best DPS weapon in the game right now and is one of the most coveted weapons for PVE activities. This is an exotic sniper rifle which originally was available in Black Armoury (Season 5) once you completed the Mystery Box Quest. Since the launch of Shadowkeep, things have changed a little concerning getting this gun, so this is a guide for how to get Izanagi’s Burden and all the quest steps involved.

Back in Black Armoury, Season of the Forge, Ada was introduced into the game as well as the Forges. These forges provided us with ways to grind out specific weapons and over the week’s new forges opened up. There are 4 forges in total (Volundr, Gofannon, Izanami and Bergusia) and these were found dotted around the solar system.

However, since the Shadowkeep update to the game back in October 2019, the Forges have changed. In update 2.6.0.1 Bungie streamlined the Forges by saying “Black Armory forges are now accessible through a director launched playlist on EDZ”. Now, rather than have 4 locations to pick on the director, we have one and they rotate daily. This is important because we’re going to need to do an activity in each forge on your way to getting Izanagi’s Burden.

By streamlining the Forges it does mean you’re going to have to do some waiting in this quest. The good news is though, that Izanagi’s Burden is one of the best, if not THE best snipers in the game. It may feel like a long quest, but it’s worth it in the end.

Pick up the Mysterious Box quest

The first thing to do is have a chat to Ada-1 and pick up the Mysterious Box quest. She’s found in the Annex in the Tower. You used to have to pick up this quest out in the wild, but now you just have to pick it up from Ada-1. If you haven’t met Ada-1 before then you’ll have to open up the Forges through a quest which involves speaking to Ada-1 and completing the Machine Gun Frame quest. Do that first, and then you’ll be able to continue to the next step of finding the keys in the forges.

Pick up the keys to open box

The first step of the quest is to pick up the keys. Three are relatively straight forward, one takes a little more time than the rest.

Pick up the Butterfly, Fishhook, and Hand Keys

To pick up these keys you have to clear the Forges with a buff called Maximum Temper active. This is activated by destroying two little droids in between the first and second round. You’ll have to be quick because they disappear pretty fast. Once you have max temper, then finish the forges and open the boxes to get the keys.

  • The Butterfly Key is found in the Izanami Forge. You can find both droids above the two islands, meaning you can stand on the central island and take them out from a distance. Make sure you’ve got a good long-range weapon (either a Scout or a Sniper will do) and take them out.
  • The Fishhook Key is found in the Volundr Forge. This time the first droid appears when you look out of the back of the forge, turn around and you’ll see the other flying inside the cave.
  • The Hand Key is found in the Gofannon Forge. This time the droids are fairly close together, one near the wreckage and the other near a cave.

When you get the keys to drop at the end of the forge runs, then go into your inventory, hover over the key and use them to insert the key into the mysterious box. Do this 3 times with each key.

OK now we have the three easy keys, it’s time to get the Black Armoury Key. We’ll still need to go through the max temper shenanigans but after a little bit of work.

Speak to Ada-1

Speak to Ada and she’ll give you a Black Armory Key Mold.

Get Watcher Lenses from Leviathan

What we have to do here is beat some specific enemies on Leviathan. They’re called Watchers and can be found in the underbelly of the Leviathan. The quest step says you have to kill them all, but you can get around this by killing simply 24.

To find them drop into the Leviathan and run forward. Drop down and under the bridge and interact with the levers in a specific pattern. By doing this you’ll open the path forward. 1 5 3 2 4 6 and make sure you do it fast, as the margin for error is pretty small. You’ll know when you’re done when you see the prompt ‘The way is open… ‘ in the bottom left-hand corner.

Once the path is open make your way up the ramps and makes your way to the opening where the pipes are. Jump along the pipes and along the ramps, making sure you don’t fall into the mist otherwise you’ll die instantly. Jump up to the left, through the door and make your way to the end and interact with the switch to turn on the fan. Jump up, go round and open the door and inside you’ll find the Watchers.

There’s 4 in there accompanied by some adds. Kill the first Watcher and it’ll alert the Cabal to come and get you, then the other Watchers put up shields. Kill the Cabal and take out the Watchers. Then simply repeat this process 6 times to get the required Watcher Lenses.

Get Glimmering Amethyst

For this step of the quest, you’ll need to collect 200 Glimmering Amethyst. You can get this by doing public events, opening planetary chests and finishing strikes. Public events give you 5 and heroic public events give you 10. You can also run strike too, but they take a little longer.

Get the final key

Once you have gathered all the glimmering amethyst you need to go back to Bergusia forge and get max temper here, beat the forge and get the final key. Once again shoot the little droids that come out halfway through the battle and at the end open up the box to get the final key.

Once you do this you’ll be able to open the mysterious box.

Get a Black Armoury Rare Bounty

This is likely to be the toughest part of the quest, not because it’s hard, but you’ll be relying on RNG. You have the chance for a Rare Bounty to drop on completion of regular daily and weekly bounties from Ada and also a small chance from completing Forges.

Bungie recently buffed the drop rate of Black Armoury Rare Bounties in update 2.7.1 and they say “Acquisition of Black Armory rare bounties significantly improved. Players that complete all available weekly and daily bounties will acquire a rare bounty within five days.” So that’s good news for everyone chasing this weapon. Once you have the rare bounty you’ll want to complete it to receive the Obsidian Crystal.

To get this rare bounty keep completing the daily bounties from Ada and within 5 days turning in bounties you’ll get a rare bounty to drop. The requirements for the rare bounty are likely to take you some time, for example with mine I had to ignite the Forges 25 times. It took a while!

Complete a run of the Shattered Throne

Now you have your Obsidian Crystal, do a run of the Shattered Throne. You can find this on the Dreaming City and you’ll likely want to do this with a Fireteam. Either hit up some friends or find some buds on LFG. The Bungie Companion app is also good for finding Guardians for specific activities. The objective here is to kill the final boss Dul Incaru.

Complete a reprise of the Pyramidion Strike

This can be found on Io and you’ll want to run this probably with a Fireteam. Make sure you access this through the director on Io, as if you do this through the strike playlist it’s not going to work correctly. Kill the boss and move onto the final step.

Kill Siviks on the EDZ

The final step of this marathon quest asks you to kill Siviks on the EDZ. Head over the EDZ and launch the mission from the patrol beacon, chase down Siviks and kill him and that’s it! You’ve done it.

Go back to Ada-1 and pick up Izanagi’s Burden

Go back to the Tower and speak to Ada-1 and she’ll hand over Izanagi’s Burden.

Now you have Izanagi’s Burden check it out. The main perk on this weapon is Honed Edge, by holding reload the gun consumes the entire magazine to load a round with additional range and damage. This is what is going to be useful in PVE activities when you want to unload big damage on strike or raid bosses. It’s also got Chambered Compensator for that increase in stability, Accurized Rounds for the increase in range, Outlaw for decreasing reload time and Composite Stock for better handling and stability.

What do you think of Izanagi’s Burden? Do you think the quest is worth it? Let me know down in the comments.
