Lenna’s Inception First Impressions

The legendary hero is dead and a strange glitch is spreading across the kingdom. Lenna’s Inception is a new action-adventure RPG that looks like Zelda games of old and is out now on Steam.

Lenna’s Inception is a top-down RPG with dungeons, bosses and a neat story. The kingdom is glitching and the evil chairman of the Banker’s Guild has captured the Prince, opening up the world to the dangerous Archangels. As the hero is gone and there’s danger around every corner, the world is at risk, so it’s up to the reluctant tutor Lenna to step up and save the day. Lenna’s not on her own though, she has the voice of the deceased elder to help her out and perhaps he knows more than he’s saying.

The kingdom is filled with dungeons and eight Archangels. Defeat these enemies to bring back order to the glitched-out kingdom. There’s a nice feature in the game where you can play co-op with a friend. Team up with Shadow Lenna and you can play in local co-op. You can also recruit companions – there’s 4 in total and they will open up over time. At the start, you have a chicken called Henrietta or a sentient Pumpkin

Lenna’s Inception’s art style is great with 8-bit and 32-bit pixel art styles available. The colours are vibrant and bright and the characters are very well designed, it’s a beautiful looking game. The fact you can choose between art styles seems like a popular modern feature and these two styles compliment each other really well.

The game is procedurally generated in part with multiple endings, multiple bosses and boss forms. You’re not going to be able to see everything in a single playthrough which is a nice motivating factor to playing through this a couple of times.

As well as the procedural generation there’s also the challenges. There’s a daily challenge, which has been made with speedrunners in mind and you can add modifiers, like no sword, only three hearts or without taking a single hit. Make your way through these challenges and onto the connected leaderboard – plus you can easily share a gif of your achievements.

Lenna’s Inception is a great Zelda-like game and the fact you can play two-player co-op is a nice feature. It would be nice to have this in online co-op, but hopefully, that could be added later in an update. There’s plenty to see and do and the puzzles are good. They’re not too hard, but not immediately obvious either. Pair that with the procedural generation then there’s plenty of reasons to keep on playing. This is the first outing for Bytten Studio, and they’re certainly one to keep an eye on for the future.
