Destiny 2 – How to get Spare Rations (Legendary Hand Cannon)
There’s plenty of weapons to farm in Destiny 2, but Spare Rations should be at the top of your list. This is a top hand cannon which is deadly in the crucible. The following is a guide for how to get Spare Rations in Destiny 2.
Spare Rations is a legendary kinetic hand cannon that was introduced during Season of The Drifter (Season 6). This has a couple of perks which make this one of the most deadly weapons in the game. Lightweight Frame allows you to move faster with the weapon equipped and this is a 150 hand cannon (similar to Thorn), which means it’s faster than most.
How to get Spare Rations
The best way to get this weapon is by running the Gambit Prime or The Reckoning. The good news is it’s much easier to get now compared to last year as the drop rates have been buffed in update 2.5.2.2 with Bungie saying “Increased weapon drop rates in Reckoning and Gambit Prime. Further increased bad luck protection to each activity, so players should receive a weapon reward after playing multiple matches without one dropping”.
This doesn’t mean however it’s going to drop every run of Gambit Prime or Reckoning, you’re still going to have to play a number of games. I’ve had 3 drops for me over a series of about 3-4 hours (although I did get two in a row). From my own personal experience, you can get this to drop in Gambit Prime, and it doesn’t matter if you win or lose as I got my first Spare Rations to drop when I lost a game.
I have read that doing The Reckoning Tier II is the best way to this get to drop when you’re fighting against The Likeness of Oyrx. This tallies up with my own experience as I managed to get 2 drops in a row in a single session when running Tier II.
How to access The Reckoning post-Shadowkeep
The Reckoning is an activity that was added as part of Season of the Drifter in Season 6 of Destiny 2. This was locked behind the season pass for Season 6, however, when Shadowkeep came out this was made free-to-play for all players.
Even though it’s free-to-play you won’t have access to this straight away – there are a few steps to go through to get access to The Reckoning and the different tiers needed to get access to Tier II. To get access to the Reckoning you’ll want to work your way through the quest User Testing.
Complete User Testing quest
The first step here is to speak to the Drifter. He’ll have a quest for you called User Testing. Pick that up plus a few daily Gambit Prime bounties. Once you complete one of these bounties by running Gambit Prime then go back to the Drifter and he’ll give you something called a Weak Synthesizer. This is what you need to access The Reckoning.
Gambit Prime rewards you Synths and these can be used in conjunction with Weak Synthesizer. These synths dropped in Gambit Prime are Invader Synth, Collector Synth, Sentry Synth, and the Reaper Synth.
How to use the Weak Synthesizer
The Weak Synthesizer allows you to pick up Gambit Prime armour from the Reckoning. Pick a type you want (e.g. Invader, Collector, Sentry, and Reaper) and stick with that until you get all the armour.
To activate the Weak Synthesizer you need to add one of the other Synth types. Interact with your Weak Synthesizer and add the synth to it before the Reckoning match. By adding the synth, this turns it into a mote. This is used then as a wager in the Reckoning match. Essentially, you’re betting against the Drifter that you’re going to win. If you lose, you get the synth back. If you win, you get new armour.
How to upgrade to the Middling Synthesizer
To get access to Tier II Reckoning, you’ll need to access the Middling Synthesizer. Once you have completed your first bounty from The Drifter go back and pick up more. You’ll want to pick up the weekly Gambit Prime bounty. Once you complete the weekly bounty you’ll get an upgrade to the Middling Synthesizer, this will allow you to craft more powerful items and access higher tiers of the Reckoning itself.
The Reckoning Tier II The Likeness of Oyrx
Now you have access to The Reckoning Tier II you’ll want to run through the phases and defeat The Likeness of Oyrx to get a higher percentage of a drop for Spare Rations. This isn’t guaranteed, but in my testing Spare Rations dropped more frequently for me during this activity.
Spare Rations
Once you get your drop of Spare Rations now it’s time to head into the Crubile and share your new toy with other Guardians. Mine has Field Prep and Rampage, which is an OK roll. Overflow and Explosive Payload is your ideal, but you can farm the specific roll you want that’s in line with your play style by playing Gambit Prime or The Reckoning.
